Imam Rauf: Mosque Site Is Not “Hallowed Ground”
After missing out on the first weeks of the proposed Lower Manhattan mosque furor Imam Rauf, the man behind Park51, appears to be making up for lost time and is now seemingly everywhere speaking about the project. And he’s apparently not afraid to jump right into the deep end.
Speaking at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York yesterday Rauf picked up on the ‘how can this be hallowed ground when it’s surrounded by strip clubs’ meme:
“It is absolutely disingenuous, as many have said, that that block is hallowed ground, with strips joints around the corner, betting parlors…It is hallowed ground in one sense, but it doesn’t add.”
He also noted that he is open to all possibilities to diffuse the situation and that “everything is on the table” including postponing the building (which is going to take a long time anyway) but that he hasn’t made any specific decisions. Also, the project is “worth all this firestorm.”
Again, if you’re curious what the Park51 ground (hallowed or otherwise) looks like we have a slideshow. No doubt the Dakota Roadhouse and Amish Market are anticipating adding ‘hallowed’ to subsequent advertising.
