Jane Fonda: If Murdoch Bought Time Warner, ‘It Would Be a Catastrophe’
Actress Jane Fonda has always been very politically outspoken, and so when TheWrap asked her for her reaction to Rupert Murdoch making a bid to acquire Time Warner (parent company of CNN, whose founder happens to be Fonda’s ex-husband), Fonda did not hold back.
Fonda told TheWrap that “it would be a catastrophe” if Murdoch was to acquire Time Warner, on top of the media empire he already owns. She said the FCC can’t allow someone like Murdoch to own that much.
And one reason for that is because of Murdoch’s politics. As Fonda explained, “It’s no secret that Rupert uses his media outlets for political reasons. And he is not neutral. And he, you know, his new outlets do things that are unconscionable. And it just cannot happen that he becomes that much of a dominant force in American media.”
Fonda currently portrays a media mogul on the HBO show The Newsroom.
Fonda also shared her thoughts on the current state of CNN, remarking that in its quest for more “infotainment,” it’s trying to “compete with stations that play to the lowest common denominator.” She still watches CNN, but “it’s not quite where it used to be, I fear.”
