The CNN vs. the White House battle came to a head, Monday morning — in a wild, marathon interview which perhaps encapsulates our nation’s current political discourse better than any television segment in recent memory.
Monday on New Day, White House Counselor Kellyanne Conway and host Chris Cuomo talked past each other and over each other for 35 minutes.
The topic, of course, was Russia and the latest reports about Donald Trump Jr.’s meeting with a Russian lawyer.
Conway fought back against Cuomo’s probing by turning the focus on CNN.
“Aren’t you the least bit reluctant, if not embarrassed that you now talk about Russia more than you talk about America?” Conway said.
“No!” Cuomo shot back. “Kellyanne, this matters.”
Back-and-forth they went on the particulars of Donald Trump Jr.’s meeting, with the two arguing about whether Trump Jr.’s statement was being presented in context. (“Put it up!” Cuomo said at one point, instructing his producers to put Trump Jr.’s complete statement on screen.)
“You don’t care if Russia was trying to get inside your campaign to affect the election?” Cuomo asked at one point.
“You don’t know what I care about!” Conway fired back.
“That was a question,” Cuomo said. “There was a question mark at the end of it.”
Cuomo tried to wrap the interview at approximately the 20 minute mark, but Conway kept after it. And despite multiple interjections from Cuomo, it went on for another 15 minutes. We’ll have the wild conclusion of this interview posted momentarily. (UPDATE: Our post on the conclusion of the interview is now live.)
