Khizr Khan Hits Trump on Morning Joe: ‘Dignity and Restraint, He’s Void of Both’

Khizr Khan’s media tour to promote his new book continued Tuesday with a stop on Morning Joe. And as expected, the Gold Star father had some pointed criticism for President Donald Trump over his conduct related to the deaths of four U.S. soldiers during an ambush in Niger.

“[D]ignity and restraint,” Khan said. “He’s void of both. His advisers should have written that on a piece of paper, put it in front of him, dignity and restraint. There are moments in this country’s life, this nation’s life, where restraint and dignity is called for.”

Khan went on to blast the Trump administration over their treatment of the press.

“This maligning of the press, the fourth pillar of United States, that is [a] trait of authoritarian mentality,” Khan said. He added, “I have seen when the newspapers were burned because they spoke badly about the general, badly about the dictator. These traits, maligning of national assemblies…maligning of the peoples’ representative. Look, connect the dots. Maligning of the media, because media criticizes the leader, and leader shuts the media down.”

Then Gold Star father closed with a rebuke of White House Chief of Staff Gen. John Kelly — whom Khan believes should have been more vocal from the outset in advising Trump on how to handle condolence calls such as the one placed to Myeshia Johnson, wife of Army Sgt. La David Johnson who was killed during the ambush in Niger.

“He knows the character of President,” Khan said of Kelly. “Lack of empathy, lack of decency.”
