Media Absurdly Covers Trump Mexico Trip Like It’s a State Visit By a Rock Star

Screen Shot 2016-08-31 at 3.51.11 PMThe parade of surreal spectacles that is the 2016 presidential election continued apace Wednesday with the hastily-arranged and mutually bewildering meeting between Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto. Forget the politics of the moment, although those are bizarre enough. Trump is about to deliver a much anticipated speech on immigration that could shake up his campaign no matter which way his policies fall, and it’s hard to see what’s in it for President Peña Nieto, who has been adversarial with Trump in the past.

No, whichever way you feel about Trump politically, the sight of news networks dutifully covering every leg of Trump’s journey, after Trump deliberately shed his traveling press corps, is surreal and absurd:

That’s just a little taste. CNN and the other news networks have obsessively covered Trump’s trip in more detail than a presidential trip, a papal visit, and a state funeral combined, and this person has not been elected to anything. Donald Trump seems to have inverted the old news maxim that “if it bleeds, it leads,” and elevated even the growing of grass to “Breaking News” status, as long as Donald Trump will be walking on that grass “any moment now.”
