The President of Mexico is continuing his feud over the border wall with Donald Trump on Twitter because it’s 2016 and this is how things work now.
It sounds like what happened was Peña Nieto said Mexico wouldn’t pay for the wall, Trump didn’t respond, and then he tried to brush the issue aside in public.
But that hasn’t kept Trump from going back to crowing about the wall now that he’s back in the U.S.:
Mexico will pay for the wall!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 1, 2016
Peña Nieto fired back:
Repito lo que le dije personalmente, Sr. Trump: México jamás pagaría por un muro. https://t.co/IJNVe0XepY
— Enrique Peña Nieto (@EPN) September 1, 2016
(“I repeat what I told you personally, Mr. Trump: Mexico will never pay for a wall.”)
Now, there’s just one problem, and it’s highlighted by this question asked of Jorge Ramos:
@EPN ¿Y por qué no se atrevió a decírselo de frente a Trump en la conferencia de prensa frente a decenas de periodistas?
— JORGE RAMOS (@jorgeramosnews) September 1, 2016
Ramos and many others want to know why Peña Nieto didn’t call out Trump when they stood together.
Well, the president has an op-ed in El Universal explaining the meeting:
I was very clear––in public and in private––to emphasize that in Mexico we feel offended and hurt by his statements about Mexicans. I expressed that we deserve respect, we are honest, hardworking people, we value the family and he culture of effort… Donald Trump’s reaction was positive. I am convinced that the greater the differences, the more dialogue is needed.
