N. Charleston Mayor Says Cops Will Wear Body Cameras After Walter Scott Shooting
The video of the Walter Scott shooting has revived the national debate over police body cameras. White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest made that point earlier today, and some commentators have wondered how different the situation would be if there had been no video.
Well, in a press conference earlier today, North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey said that he’s taking executive action by ordering every police officer to have a body camera on them.
Summey explained, “Once the cameras come in, we have to train them on operation of the camera, but we also have to establish a policy. We have already been drafting a policy through the police department for our legal department to look at and make sure it passes muster.”
Body cameras are a source of much agreement across political lines, and just months ago President Obama announced a measure to provide 50,000 body cameras to state and local police.
As for the shooter, Officer Michael Slager, he’s been charged with murder and has officially been fired from the police force.
