Neil deGrasse Tyson Congratulates Trevor Noah, Daily Show on One Big Change
Celebrity astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson was very, very pleased with the premiere of the new Trevor Noah-led Daily Show on Monday night, but probably not for the same reason as many others who applauded the South-African comedian’s selection as host.
Did Tyson, an African-American scientist cut from the same cloth as Carl Sagan, like Noah’s debut because of his skin color? Did he enjoy Comedy Central’s apparent dedication to diversity (as opposed to broadcast television’s white-washing)?
The answer, as Uproxx points out, is none of the above. Tyson is a science nerd, first and foremost, so his congratulatory tweet on Monday had less to do with skin color and more to do with the earth’s rotation:

When Tyson appeared on the then-Jon Stewart hosted program back in 2012 to promote his book Space Chronicles, he couldn’t help but point out the error in the show’s opening credits. The bit, which arrived in the final moments of his interview, inspired a hilarious outburst from Stewart:
The Daily Show changed the globe’s spin in the opening credits in 2013, but Tyson apparently decided to use the new incarnation’s initial correct usage as a means of congratulating Noah and everyone involved.
