NY Man Arrested for Allegedly Planning ISIS-Inspired NYE Attack
A New York man and believed ISIS sympathizer was arrested this week for allegedly attempting to carry out an attack on New Year’s Eve.
According to NBC News, Emanuel Lutchman was arrested and charged with attempting to provide material support for ISIS. Federal authorities said he had pledged allegiance to the terrorist group and had been in contact with an ISIS member from Syria.
He had allegedly been encouraged to carry out an attack on New Year’s Eve against non-Muslims. He spoke with confidential informants about his plans and told one of them he had plans to potentially set a bomb inside a club or bar somewhere in New York.
Lutchman had specifically discussed potentially using pressure cookers, saying things like, “I will take a life. I don’t have a problem with that.”
His grandmother told NBC News he has a history of psychiatric issues and he’s been dealing with some marital problems––Lutchman has a wife and a two-year-old son. She relayed that her grandson called her and said he had been set up in a sting.
The DOJ’s statement on the arrest says he was attempting to join ISIS and faces up to 20 years in prison along with a $250,000 fine.
