While trying to engage her audience on the subject of Hurricane Matthew, the Weather Channel’s Jennifer Delgado went a little off-script once she got to talking about Haiti, where the hurricane made landfall yesterday.
Yeah, she said that the lack of trees in Haiti is a result of deforestation and…kids…eating…them?
“Even the kids there, they’re so hungry, they actually eat the trees!”
Yep, that’s what she said.
Seems like a strange statement to use as a space-filler, but anchors have been known to babble when they know they have to take up some time.
Viewers are not being forgiving, though. A petition has launched on Change.org that seeks to get Delgado fired.
For her part, she has apologized…
…but the petition has still almost reached 10,000 signatures. That might have something to do with how emphatically it was written. Here is a sample of what the launcher, Jonathan Francois, wrote:
NO, HAITIANS DO NOT EAT TREES. Get your facts right before you offend 15 millions Haitians.
Haitians around the world are extremely upset and offended by her stupid remarks and want her separation from her employer.
Obviously, it will take more than an apology for this to go away.
