Port Authority Eliminates Position Christie Created for David Wildstein

In the end, the only thing the Director of Interstate Capital Projects at the Port Authority seemed to be responsible for was creating an artificial traffic jam on the George Washington Bridge. On Tuesday, the Port Authority eliminated the position.

The job was created for David Wildstein in August of 2010 by New Jersey Governor Chris Christie; it had no real job description, and Wildstein was the only person who ever held the title. He resigned last fall, when the lane closures on the GW Bridge were still a local controversy, and before damning emails and texts were released showing him rejoicing in the traffic problems.

Wildstein, who may or many not have been high school friends with Christie, is now embroiled in a war of legal memos and public recriminations with the man who appointed him. Wildstein alleges Christie knew of the lane closures; Christie accuses Wildstein of a lifetime of deceit — leaving open the question of why Christie invented the position for him.

No one else seems to know, either. “Maybe what it says is that his job wasn’t really necessary,” one state lawmaker said.
