Reporter at Center of ABC/CPI Fight Just Left for BuzzFeed
A pretty nasty fight broke out Wednesday between ABC News and Center for Public Integrity over Chris Hamby’s just-awarded Pulitzer Prize for investigative reporting, which ABC News felt should have been shared with their team. Then, just an hour after CPI responded in a statement adamantly asserting that Hamby did the lion’s share of the reporting, BuzzFeed announced it had hired him.
Capital reported Wednesday afternoon that Hamby will head over to the website, which has been actively building an investigative news division under Mark Schoofs, who began courting Hamby several months ago.
BuzzFeed denied they went after Hamby following his Pulitzer this week. “We didn’t want to and aren’t trying to steal any of the limelight,” the site told Capital. “We’re just incredibly proud of Chris for the prize, and most of all for the impact his work had in the lives of coal miners facing black lung.”
