Richard Sherman and Life-Size Cutout of Doug Baldwin Blast NFL’s Media Policies
Earlier this week, Seattle Seahawks player Marshawn Lynch got fined $100,000 by the NFL for not talking to enough reporters after a game, violating the league’s media policies. His teammate, outspoken cornerback Richard Sherman, decided to point out the league’s hypocrisy by staging a press conference with teammate Doug Baldwin, as played by a life-sized cardboard cutout of Doug Baldwin.
“You know, they wouldn’t have even paid him $100,000 if he had spoken. But you know who does pay me a lot of money? Beats by Dre. The wonderful headphones that I wear,” he said, referring to a product he personally endorses. “But the league doesn’t let me say anything about them. Why is that, Doug?”
“I don’t know. Sounds a little hypocritical to me,” said the Baldwin cutout.
Sherman and Cardboard Baldwin went on to blast the NFL for making them play two games in five days — “It doesn’t seem like [they] care about player safety,” said Sherman — enforcing bizarre endorsement policies, and forcing them to endure these inane press conferences.
But at least they were fulfilling their contractual obligations: “It’s fun to use your time in the NFL to talk about things you care about, right? Because you don’t get fined $100,000 for not talking, right?” Sherman asked, after name-dropping all the products he endorses.
