RNC Files Formal Complaint Over Obama Campaigning On Taxpayer-Funded Excursions
On Wednesday, the Republican National Committee filed a formal complaint with the Government Accountability Office over President Barack Obama’s use of official taxpayer-funded presidential resources for what appears to be campaign-related trips to swing states.
In the letter below, RNC Chairman Reince Priebus notes President Obama’s trips to three battleground states, Colorado, Iowa and North Carolina where he has delivered several speeches in recent weeks to students promoting his administration’s push to extend artificially low interest rates on student loans.
The most recent example of such misuse came yesterday in North Carolina and Colorado. President Obama traveled to the two states at taxpayer expense to deliver speeches to cheering crowds of college students, events widely reported to be equivalent to campaign rallies.
The letter to the GAO, which can be interpreted as a campaign document in itself as it makes mention that during his “short time as a senator,” Barack Obama failed to vote on the original low interest rate legislation that he now recommends be extended.
One incident of this might be an error that is easily remedied. But it is a pattern of behavior that is worsening. In fact in three and a half years, President Obama has held dozens of events that benefitted OFA on the taxpayer dime.
