Is Anthony Weiner getting his own show on talk radio? Sources at two of the major talk radio distributors tell Mediaite they’ve been receiving calls asking about the possibility of the Weiner-hosted syndicated show, but so far the companies are issuing flat-out denials.
“Our comment is best summed up by Taylor Swift’s hit song, ‘We’re never, ever getting back together’ — and in this case we were never together to begin with as this is nothing Cumulus ever contemplated,” said a spokesman for Cumulus Media Network, which distributes shows from Mark Levin, Don Imus and more.
A source from Clear Channel had a more succinct answer to the speculation over Weiner joining their ranks: “Just not true.”
So, where did these rumors begin? According to one Cumulus insider, speculation began swirling after Weiner was spotted in WABC’s studios when he appeared as a guest on Geraldo Rivera’s radio show following his fifth place finish in New York’s mayoral primary. “Yes, he was in the building as a guest on a show,” the source said. “No, he’s not getting his own show.”
The New York Daily News’ Confidenti@l blog also picked up the Weiner radio rumors Friday, claiming that Weiner is in talks to “host a 5-6 p.m. drive-time chat show on either WOR or WABC radio, focusing on local politics.” They did not get any on-the-record confirmations of those supposed “talks” from either station.
According to a report by Politicker’s Jill Colvin published back in September, Weiner began meeting with potential media agents long before he announced his mayoral bid. Colvin wrote that Weiner “wanted to gauge how a failed mayoral bid would impact his prospects of landing a lucrative TV or radio gig” and quoted an “industry insider” who said that “exploring his media options became a factor in running for mayor.”
