Scarborough Takes on Trump’s ‘Chaotic, Rambling’ Presser: ‘He Just Doesn’t Have Control of Reality’
Now that the collective political media apparatus has had half a day to take a deep breath and digest Thursday’s remarkable press conference that came from the White House East Room, the hot takes continue to fly fast. And despite the fact that President Donald Trump even went out of his way to highlight Fox & Friends as the only “honest” morning cable news show, that didn’t stop the Morning Joe crew from tearing into the almost hour-and-a-half performance.
“That would have been a really funny hour or so of television,” said Joe Scarborough Friday morning, “if he weren’t President of the United States.” He continued, “It was one of the most chaotic, rambling press conferences anybody has ever seen.”
The MSNBC host noted however that while members of the Fourth Estate were appropriately outraged at Trump’s treatment of the press, the hardcore base of supporters enjoyed the criticisms. “They were laughing. And they weren’t laughing at Donald Trump; they were laughing at the media.”
Columnist Mike Barnicle added Friday morning, “Yesterday, the first 35 minutes of that press conference was watching a President of the United States who has lost a grip on reality. It was as if he performed for himself because he needed to perform like that because he needed to convince himself he was president.”
The panel continued in its harsh tone while dissecting the presser in the opening minutes of Friday’s show, “Everybody I talked to on the hill, including a lot of Republican senators and congressmen, were scared to death by what they saw. And more than one said, ‘This just isn’t going to last long because he just doesn’t have control of reality.'”
“He says things that are verifiably false,” Scarborough continued Friday morning. But agree or disagree, the lasting impression shared by many was that the East Room event was one of historic proportions.
“It’s going in a time capsule,” offered Mark Halperin.
