Sisters Post Video About How Sorry They Are For Allegedly Blackmailing a Nigerian Billionaire
Two sisters based in Toronto began a gossip site about Nigerian people that led to their arrest and now they’re apologizing.
Jyoti and Kiran Matharoo were arrested and detained after allegedly trying to extort billionaire businessman Femi Otedola by claiming they had proof of him cheating on his wife. Court documents show that they are accused of using their site, NaijaGistLive, “for the humiliation and cyber bullying of some 274 persons.”
In happier times, they used their money to take lavish trips and post photos of them to Instagram for their tens of thousands of followers:
Now, though, they’re awaiting on their case’s date of January 26, according to Vice.
In the video, they said they were not under duress, were making the apology on their own, and got no money from their site.
Notably, they claimed no one was supposed to get hurt by the things posted on the site:
We created a platform called NaijaGistLive.com and .co where people can send in stories. Most stories were sent by close friends or associates of people being written about. The intention was not to hurt anyone or be malicious; the intention was not to extort anyone.
Let this be a lesson: The Nigerian Prince scam your grandfather almost fell for in 2001 is so over. The era of the Nigerian gossip site scam is upon us.
