Steve Bannon Reportedly Orders Breitbart to Attack Trump-Backed Alabama Senate Candidate
So it looks like President Donald Trump’s former chief strategist is going directly against his former boss in a highly watched GOP primary race.
According to a new report by CNN Money, Breitbart chief Steve Bannon has ordered his outlet’s editorial staff to go negative against Trump-backed Alabama Senate candidate Luther Strange. The ex-Trump aide is backing Strange’s opponent in the primary runoff, former judge Roy Moore.
Per a conversation captured on Breitbart’s internal Slack channel, the outlet’s Washington editor Matthew Boyle told writers they’d be going all in on the story:
Shortly after Bannon told top editors to increase the site’s volume of reporting on the race, Matthew Boyle, Breitbart’s Washington editor, told staff “the only story that matters until next week is Alabama.”
“As of now, everyone is working on the Alabama race,” Boyle wrote in a message obtained by CNN in the company’s internal Slack channel. “If anyone has any questions please let me know.”
Recently, it was reported that Bannon was working with conservative allies to push primary challengers against GOP incumbent senators. He has also reportedly discussed possible replacements for Speaker of the House Paul Ryan with Freedom Caucus members.
