#StoptheParade: Ferguson Protesters Call to Disrupt Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade
Ferguson protests broke out all over the country this week, even in New York, and today some activists got #StoptheParade trending on social media to take it to the next level: disrupting the New York Thanksgiving Day Parade.
And the NYPD has been taking this seriously, because according to a New York Post report last night, “anarchists” were planning to crash the parade, and felt emboldened to do so because of the cops’ fairly hands-off approach to the mass protests this week that shut down three bridges.
But as one law enforcement source put it, “They’re not going to be able to do at the parade what they did at the Brooklyn Bridge. What are they going to do, trample kids to stop a float?”
Here’s some of the tweets using the #stoptheparade hashtag:
Keep #Ferguson number 1 because it's more important than celebrating the genocide of Native Americans. #stoptheparade

#stoptheparade b/c the media will stop covering Ferguson altogether & the world will forget until another black boy is killed in the street.

a murderer is going free. we should not be having a parade celebrating our country's history of benefiting from genocide. #stoptheparade

Power cedes nothing without demand. The only way to truly invoke change is to disrupt a comfortable power structure. #stoptheparade

People who object to #stoptheparade are actually telling us that their amusement is worth more than our lives. Think on that.

#stoptheparade has parents worrying that it'll disrupt their kid's day. Guess they're too privileged to worry about their kids dying instead

One person's argument against #stoptheparade was "kids will be disappointed". If it were possible to reach thru twitter and smack…nvm.

as long as you don't care about black kids getting shot up for nothing, we won't care about your child's parade being ruined #stoptheparade

Actually hope the protesters pull this off. This is no time for a parade. #stoptheparade

I support #stoptheparade. Innocent lives are worth more than parade balloons and show tunes. Good luck to everyone in NYC. #Ferguson

And while as of this posting, there hasn’t been any significant stop to the parade, plenty of protesters did turn out:
