Texas GOP Wants Secession Resolution On March Primary Ballot

According to the San Antonio Express-News, a proposal to put Texas’ secession from the United States to a non-binding vote in March cleared a Republican-controlled state committee on Friday. By putting the issue to a non-binding vote, Texas Republicans and secessionists would simply gauge the voting public’s interest in the subject, as it would have no legal impact on the state’s federal relations.

“There’s been a big groundswell of Texans that are getting into the Texas independence issue,” State Republican Executive Committee member Tanya Robertson told the Houston Chronicle. “I believe conservatives in Texas should have a choice to voice their opinion.”

Texas GOP chairman Tom Melcher noted that several similar initiatives have circulated in recent years, but none had sufficient support to make it onto the primary ballot in March.

Karl Voigtsberger, another member of the SREC, told the Chronicle he is “fully supportive” of Robertson’s efforts. If anything, he noted, so that they could “find out where the majority of Texas Republican primary voters are on this topic.”

Is it going to happen? Most likely not, says Melcher. Yet that Robertson’s proposal has made it past the SREC is telling.
