Thai PM Has Some Thoughts on ‘Divisive’ Soap Operas, Fortune-Tellers

Imagine the president or prime minister of any country taking a stand against soap operas or publicly admitting they consult with fortune-tellers. Odd, right? Well, Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha did both of those this week.

Firstly, he told reporters today that he’s getting pretty tired of soap operas that just seek to divide people. And he’s solving that by ordering government-appointed writers to come up with better scripts that don’t “make people fight and… create divisions.”

(This is probably the best time to point out and/or remind you that Prayuth led a military coup that toppled the Thai government earlier this year.)

Prayuth explained, “I have ordered that scripts be written. One plot will be two foreign families come to visit Thailand, they meet each other and come to love each other.”

One of them’s a slob! The other’s a neat freak! Throw in a talking dog and a totally hip grandma and you’ve got yourself a show!

Now, while it’s possible Prayuth got this idea himself, he may have also been influenced by fortune-tellers. Because Prayuth himself said earlier this week that he listens to fortune-tellers. No, seriously.

“There’s no harm in listening to fortune-tellers. Fortune-telling is an art. But if a fortune-teller tells a person that they will be rich and then they stay in bed all day, then what is the use?”

There’s even a rumor that Prayuth has consulted a famous mystic simply known as ET. He denied it this week, saying, “I’ve never been to ET. Even if you wanted me to go I would never.”

So yes, if you’re keeping score, that is the prime minister of Thailand denying he has been to see a mystic who shares a name with a famous movie alien. Top that, Cameron!

Oh, and if you’re looking for an additional piece of WTFery from Prayuth, just last week he said this, just two days after two British citizens were found dead on the beach, half-naked and with multiple serious wounds all over their bodies:

“Tourists think that Thailand is beautiful, safe and that they can do anything they want here. That they can put on their bikinis and go anywhere they want. I ask, can you get away with wearing bikinis in Thailand? Unless you are not beautiful?”

Prayuth, of course, ended up apologizing for those remarks.
