Top White House Lawyer Don McGahn Reportedly Expected To Step Down Later This Year

It looks like another prominent member of the Trump administration may soon leave the White House.

According to Politico, White House Counsel Don McGahn is expected to step down as the president’s top attorney sometime later this year. McGahn has told friends he wants to return to work at the Jones Day law firm, where he was a partner before joining the administration.

McGahn’s departure would apparently be dependent on a number of factors, notably finding a suitable replacement for the position. Other aspects in play could be the upcoming midterm elections and whether or not a Supreme Court spot becomes vacant.

The news of McGahn’s potential resignation — he has told associates he’d like to be gone by summer — comes as there’s been high turnover within the administration and the president’s orbit. Just in the past few weeks, we’ve seen changes in high-profile positions such as communications director, secretary of state, chief economic adviser, CIA director and national security adviser. On top of all that, the president has shaken up his Russia probe legal team, with lead counsel John Dowd quitting and husband-wife team Joe diGenova and Victoria Toensing added.

McGahn has been knee-deep in events that Special Counsel Robert Mueller is investigating in his Russia probe. He told the president about former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn’s conversations with the Russian ambassador that eventually led to Flynn’s firing. McGahn was also involved with trying to stop Attorney General Jeff Sessions from recusing himself from the Russia investigation.

And, oh yeah, McGahn also threatened to quit last year when he was reportedly approached to look at ways to fire Mueller.
