WATCH: Topless Female Activist Tries to Steal Jesus Statue From Vatican Nativity Scene
And now, here’s your weird Christmas story for the day.
A topless female activist caused a scene in Rome today when she jumped a guardrail and tried to storm a nativity scene in St. Peter’s Square. Italian police took down the demonstrator as she tried to steal a statue of baby Jesus, and she repeatedly shouted “God is woman” throughout the arrest. The message was also painted on the woman’s bare back.
According to Reuters, the incident happened approximately two hours before Pope Francis delivered his Christmas address to the tens of thousands gathered in the square.
The woman was identified as Alisa Vinogradova, a member of the Ukrainian feminist organization known as FEMEN. The group has pulled similar stunts in the past to protest the “patriarchy,” and their website released a statement demanding that the Vatican release Vinogradova from detainment.
“FEMEN demands from the Vatican to immediately release the activist, leave women alone and condemn pedophilia in the highest chirch hierarchy!” the statement said. “The FEMEN act was directed against the Vatican’s millennial infringement of the rights of women to their own bodies.”
