Trump Denies GOP is About to Cave Despite Senators Calling For End to Shutdown: ‘Totally Unified’

Despite increased chatter from Republican Senators that they are ready for the shutdown to end, President Donald Trump told reporters that the GOP will not crack in the shutdown fight.

Speaking briefly on Capitol Hill after meeting with Congressional Republicans, the president responded to a query about whether his part cohorts want him to pursue a different strategy in his fight for a Southern border wall.

“We talked about strategy,” Trump said. “But they’re with us all the way.”

He added, “I just want to tell you that the Republicans are totally unified. Now, if you were to ask the same question to the Democrats, you let me know in some of those districts where I won, or that are a little bit more towards sanity, you want them to run, say ‘We don’t want to have border security?’ You’ve got plenty of Democrats that don’t want to be in this battle…The Republicans are unified.”

Comments from several Republican Senators, however, suggest otherwise. Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), and Sen. Shelly Moore Capito (R-WV) are among those who have made remarks criticizing the shutdown in the past few hours.
