In a roundabout manner, President Trump told Mexican president Enrique Pena Nieto that his country will inevitably pay for a wall on the southern border of the United States.
Trump met his Mexican counterpart for the first time today as the G20 Summit gets underway in Hamburg, Germany. After Trump delivered some brief remarks, reporters shouted questions to him about whether Mexico is still going to pay for the wall.
According to multiple reporters and a variety of news outlets, Trump’s answer was “absolutely.”

Trump’s promise about the wall’s payment has been previously established as a diplomatic complication with Mexico. Trump was supposed to meet Pena Nieto shortly after he was sworn into office, but the two leaders got in a spat about the wall, and the Mexican president ended up aborting the meeting.
The Mexican government has stated on multiple occasions that they have no intention to reimburse America for the costs of a border wall.
