Watch Seahawks Coach Try to Explain Final Play Call

Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll’s final call last night, which turned a sure-thing go-ahead touchdown into a crushing loss to the New England Patriots, remains inexplicable the next morning, even after Carroll had a chance to explain it.

Carroll did take full responsibility for the call, and praised rookie cornerback Malcolm Butler’s “miraculous” reading of the play as it happened. The rest of this, though, is pretty much word salad. Carroll sounded as though he were saving his run game for later downs if the pass were incomplete. Twelve hours later, that’s still weird.
