NBC’s Kristen Welker Roasted By Trump Critics For Stunning Commentary on Trump Attacking Judge’s Family
Meet the Press host Kristen Welker stunned social media critics with her comment on former President Donald Trump’s attacks on Judge Juan Merchan and his family.
On this week’s edition of NBC’s Meet the Press, Welker opened the show with a brief introduction summarizing President Joe Biden’s outreach to Nikki Haley voters, as well as Trump’s social media barrage against Merchan and his family.
KRISTEN WELKER: Good Sunday morning and Happy Easter. The 2024 campaign is intensifying with that historic show of force for President Biden from his democratic predecessors Barack Obama and Bill Clinton at Radio City Music Hall. The Biden campaign also announcing a new effort to reach out to Nikki Haley voters, using Donald Trump’s own words against him.

FMR. PRES. DONALD TRUMP:
She is – she’s gone haywire.
FMR. PRES. DONALD TRUMP: There aren’t that many never Trumpers anymore.
FMR. PRES. DONALD TRUMP: How do you bring these nikki haley voters back into the tent?
FMR. PRES. DONALD TRUMP: I’m not sure we need too many
[END TAPE]
KRISTEN WELKER: Meanwhile this week, the former president stepped up his attacks on the judge and his family in the New York hush money case, after that judge imposed a partial gag order on Mr. Trump less than three weeks from the April 15th start date in that trial. And now, Trump is asserting that none of the trials should quote “take place during my campaign,” falsely calling the criminal proceedings “election interference.”
It is yet another reminder that we are covering this election against the backdrop of a deeply divided nation. But this week, there were also signs of how this country has the incredible capacity to come together. We saw that in Baltimore when the country rallied around that community after the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge which claimed 6 lives.
A portion of that intro went viral when it was flagged by video influencer Aaron Rupar, minus the part about Biden and her assertion that “the country rallied around” Baltimore after the bridge collapse (presumably not including the ones who blamed it on “DEI” or otherwise did not rally).
Prominent X/Twitter users torched Welker over the observation:
It would be more to the point to say, “We are covering this election against the backdrop of one of the candidates being a narcissistic sociopath.” https://t.co/srfow4NDr4

“Whether it’s threatening violence against judges, or threatening to hold polluters accountable for their carbon emissions, both sides have a ‘threatening’ problem.”

Yes, we’re a “deeply divided nation.” We’re divided between people who think it’s OK to foment violence against judges and their families, and those who don’t. https://t.co/FC3TfWLugt

She’s just awful! It’s not divided to attack a judges daughter. It’s deranged. https://t.co/N1MvLaQYBv

we’re covering an election in which the leader of one of our two major parties is a deranged criminal acting like a mob boss to muscle his way out of deep legal jeopardy https://t.co/5ZUDpuky1g

The fourth estate is having its 1930s Germany moment: At a time in our history when America is under attack from a deranged lunatic, Kristen Welker continues to pander in bothsidesism. It is the failure of the free press that’ll be the death of democracy.pic.twitter.com/R1Q5FFUWbQ

This is totally insufficient to the gravity and magnitude of the threat https://t.co/dTdq56rMjj

No. You are covering this election against the backdrop that one of the candidates uses threats, intimidation and violent rhetoric to incite his followers as he has done many times in the past. This once-great show is utterly unwatchable. https://t.co/jg5DuFLeyo

Sorry, but there are no two sides here. This is being perpetrated by one man & one man only — Donald Trump. His rhetoric, his words, and his posts are making our democracy & country & justice system less safe. Watch below. This is not it, MTP.pic.twitter.com/x8cBXQsjj8

The north star of corporate media is profit, ratings and access. Quite harmful when democracy is under attack by one of the two political parties. Instead of blunt truth we get “both sides.” Here we are. https://t.co/OTCUgSexo5

It’s truly a shame that our nation has been so deeply divided since January 6th, an event that took place against the backdrop of a deeply divided election in which the clear loser tried to stay in power through lies, cheating, and violence. https://t.co/kZ7lCzfphq

🤣 you can not parody this https://t.co/X1BgQZGypA

One side wants to use political murder to intimidate away judicial oversight, the other side says that’s bad and wrong. This morning on Meet the Press….https://t.co/FWhw3Od85U

Doing the both sides/ false equivalence dance especially just days after trump shared the vile hog tied video is some kind of earth 2 nonsense. https://t.co/mYkvOFtVhx
