Trump Exploits Anti-Trans Easter Outrage By Proclaiming Election Day Will Be ‘Christian Visibility Day’
Speaking at a rally in Green Bay, Wisconsin, Wednesday night, former President Donald Trump baselessly attacked President Joe Biden over the fact that Transgender Visibility Day fell on the same day as Easter Sunday this year. But his follow-up message of calling election day “Christian Visibility Day” is sure to appeal to his base of voters, but should raise eyebrows across the country and world,
For the past 15 years, the International Day of Transgender Visibility has been recognized on March 31st. This year, the Biden Administration issued a proclamation recognizing the day, which included a statement that read, in part, “All Americans to join us in lifting up the lives and voices of transgender people throughout our Nation and to work toward eliminating violence and discrimination based on gender identity.”
Many online conservatives pounced on the statement, baselessly insisting it was evidence that Biden wanted to remove religion and instead embrace a transgender God or some braindead attack that made next to no sense if you considered the details of the story for more than a few seconds. One conservative commentator on Fox News claimed Catholics were “right to be offended” by transgender visibility because, well, some people are intolerant of others, I guess?
The story was largely debunked, with the Daily Caller even retracting a “Biden restricting religious Easter eggs” story adjacent to this one, and everyone seemed ready and willing to move on. Until Wednesday night, when Trump returned to the attack, facts be damned and took it up a notch or two.
Trump first falsely blamed Biden for declaring the holiest Christian holiday to be Trans Visibility Day. “What the hell was Biden thinking when he declared Easter Sunday to be Trans Visibility Day?” he asked, to which the audience of supporters booed with thumbs down, just like one might see at a pro wrestling event. “Such total disrespect to Christian!” he added.
“November 5th is going to be called something else, you know,” Trump continued. “It’s going to be called Christian Visibility Day when Christians turn out in numbers that nobody has ever seen.”
Trump later promoted the idea on social media, posting: “Election Day, November 5th, will be the most important day in the History of our Country. It will also be Christian Visibility Day, the biggest turnout of Christians in the history of our Country!”
This comment was quickly seized upon by pro-Trump online lackeys, including Caitlyn Jenner, who is not just a loyal Trump surrogate but also a transgender pioneer of sorts.
One wonders how Americans of other faiths — the Jews, Muslims, and Hindus, for example — feel about a leading candidate suggesting a vote for him is a Christian endeavor. Trump’s comments do not align with the long-held constitutional standard of separation between church and state.
