CNN’s S.E. Cupp Rips Mike Pence’s ‘Mealy-Mouthed’ and ‘Impotent’ Rebuke of Trump
Not every anti-Donald Trump political pundit was impressed with former Vice President Mike Pence’s decision not to endorse the ex-president.
On Friday, Pence, who challenged Trump for the GOP nomination this cycle, told Fox News he will not endorse the man he served under for four years.
“I will not be endorsing Donald Trump,” Pence said while adding that he will not vote for President Joe Biden. Pence would not reveal whom he will vote for. The former veep cited “profound differences between me and President Trump on a range of issues.”
Pence cited the Jan. 6 Capitol riot before claiming Trump has been “walking away from our commitment” to reduce the national debt, pursue anti-abortion policies, and be tough on China.
While Pence received plaudits from some pundits, CNN commentator S.E. Cupp had a different perspective.
“That is remarkable,” she said on Friday’s edition of The Situation Room. “However, pinning the reason on policy disagreements feels a bit like a cop-out. To say he’s now at odds with the conservative agenda? Trump has always been at odds with the conservative agenda, whether that was the debt and the deficit, limited government, family values, protectionism. Mike Pence seems to be fine with all of that.”
Cupp stated that Trump increased the national debt “with Mike Pence’s help.” She then called the former vice president’s rebuke of Trump “mealy-mouthed” and “impotent”:
It’s just crazy to me that Mike Pence can’t say – after all of this time now that he’s made it official he’s not endorsing him – “It’s because Donald Trump is dangerous. It’s because he led an insurrection. It’s because he’s corrupt. It’s because he’s facing criminal indictments. It’s because he’s anti-America and anti-democratic.” He can’t say all the very obvious things he has to say.
They now have “policy disagreements.” It’s just so mealy-mouthed and a pretty, I think, impotent way to end what was once a pretty promising political career for Mike Pence.
As vice president, Pence was the presiding officer over the certification of the 2020 election in Congress. Despite entreaties from Trump urging him to refuse certification, Pence rejected those calls. When he declined to implement Trump’s harebrained scheme, a mob stormed the Capitol and tried to overturn the election. Some of those in attendance chanted, “Hang Mike Pence!” as Pence and his family were in the building.
