Senate Minority Leader Chucker Schumer (D-NY) ignited a wave of backlash this week as he worked to increase his social media presence and take a stronger stance against President Donald Trump. Schumer’s attempt at owning Trump was so widely mocked, even The Daily Show got in on the action.

Schumer went viral in all the wrong ways on Monday night with a video clip he posted of himself slamming Trump’s recent negotiations with Iran. “If TACO Trump is already folding on Iran, the American people need to know about it. No side deals,” read the caption on the clip – referring to the acronym “Trump Always Chickens Out,” which has become a popular bard from the left in recent weeks.

“When it comes to negotiating with the terrorist government of Iran, Trump’s all over the lot,” Schumer began in the video, adding:

One day he sounds tough, the next day he’s backing off. And now, all of a sudden, we find out that Witkoff and Rubio are negotiating a secret side deal with Iran. What kind of bull is this? They’re gonna sound tough in public and then have a side deal that lets Iran get away with everything? That’s outrageous.

We need to make that side deal public. Any side deal should be before Congress and most importantly the American people. If TACO Trump is already folding, the American public should know about it. No side deals.

The comments on Schumer’s video were resoundingly negative, so much so that they became fodder for a Daily Show post.

“When your message is connecting with your audience,” read the Daily Show’s version of Schumer’s video. The Daily Show played the first few seconds of Schumer’s clip and then, using the Star Wars theme song and imagery from the opening credits, showed the comments users left for Schumer. “Shut the fuck up, Chuck,” read one comment, while another added, “I hate you. Yes, you, the Senate intern reading this. Quit working for that piece of shit.”

The video also received a lot of commentary from journalists and pundits. Congressional correspondent Marc Rod reacted, “What Schumer is saying here about any side deals with Iran needing to come before Congress is practically verbatim from the GOP talking points a couple of years ago under Biden.” Former Bernie Sanders advisor Matt Duss added, “Schumer was wrong to try and kill Obama’s Iran deal. He’d be wrong to try and kill Trump’s.”

Left on left anger wasn’t the only kind of vitriol Schumer ignited this week. On Wednesday, he was mocked by the right, including the White House’s official “Rapid Response” account for labeling Trump’s budget bill the “Well, We Are All Going to Die Act” – a jab at Sen. Joni Ernst’s (R-IA) recent gaffe.
Conservative CNN contributor Scott Jennings shared the clip and added, “No one should ever – ever – take these people seriously ever again ever.”
