George Conway, the prominent conservative lawyer and Trump critic, shared a Politico interview with a New Hampshire voter on Monday night, calling it “the most illuminating thing I’ve ever read about Trumpism.”

The interview by senior staff writer Michael Kruse quickly went viral after it was published and Conway offered both praise and a short summary:

This is perhaps the most illuminating thing I’ve ever read about Trump𝙞𝙨𝙢, as opposed to Trump himself.

This New Hampshire GOP voter is angry. But he doesn’t really know 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 he’s angry about. He 𝙬𝙖𝙣𝙩𝙨 to be angry. He 𝙙𝙤𝙚𝙨 know 𝙬𝙝𝙤𝙢 he is angry at—the people who he thinks run the country and who he thinks think themselves better than he. He wants to harm them, even if it harms him, and even if it harms the country—indeed, 𝙚𝙨𝙥𝙚𝙘𝙞𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙮 if it harms the country, because he thinks harming the country is the best way to harm the people he wants to harm.

Kruse detailed his many conversations with a New Hampshire GOP voter named Ted Johnson and his journey over the last year from supporting Nikki Haley and her message of unity to deciding to vote for Donald Trump who he hopes will make the country suffer.

“I think his policies are going to be good,” Johnson said of Trump, adding, “But it’s going to be hard to watch this happen to our country. He’s going to pull it apart.”

Many pundits and commentators weighed in on the interview, with author James Surowiecki noting, “This piece deserves the attention it’s getting. This guy has a good job (and a pension), owns a pricey house, is married with 3 adult kids, but still thinks the US needs a president to tear everything down. His support for Trump has nothing to do with the reality of his life.”
