Impatient Trump Tries To End Meeting With African Leader: ‘We’re Gonna Have To Go a Bit Quicker Than This’
President Donald Trump impatiently tried to end a meeting with Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani on Wednesday before asking the president to state his “name and your country.”
As Ghazouani spoke for around seven minutes about investment opportunities and rare earth minerals, Trump began to look increasingly impatient before eventually making what The New Republic described as a “wrap-it-up gesture.”
“I don’t want to spend too much time on this,” Ghazouani responded to the gesture.
Trump then interrupted, “But I appreciate it very much. I appreciate it. Maybe we’re gonna have to go a little bit quicker than this because we have a whole schedule. If I could just ask, you know, your name and your country, would be great. Thank you, please.”
Trump invited the leaders of five African countries – Mauritania, Liberia, Senegal, Guinea-Bissau, and Gabon – to a three-day summit to discuss “commercial opportunities” this week.
Speaking to Liberian President Joseph Nyuma Boakai on Wednesday, Trump complimented the leader for speaking English “so beautifully.”
Trump received backlash and mockery online over the compliment, with critics pointing out that the official language of Liberia is English.
“Where did you — where did you learn to speak so beautifully? Where were you educated? Where? In Liberia?” asked Trump, to which Boakai replied, “Yes, Sir.”
Trump responded, “Well, that’s very interesting. That’s beautiful English. I have people at this table can’t speak nearly as well.”
