Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) called for all U.S. funding for Ukraine to be “redirected to Israel immediately” on Monday following Hamas’ attack against Israeli civilians.
“Israel is facing existential threat. Any funding for Ukraine should be redirected to Israel immediately,” wrote Hawley on X, formerly known as Twitter.
While Hawley’s post received more than 12,000 likes, it also received criticism from across the political spectrum.
As a Ukrainian Jew, there is only one thing to say to this, and it’s f— off.
Ukrainians and Israelis both deserve to be safe from homicidal terrorists that target civilians. https://t.co/0BjSmGt6mh

Right. On. Cue.
So predictable.
Here’s an idea. We, the wealthiest nation in human history, could provide support to two key democratic allies under existential threat at once.
And we could do it while funding universal healthcare here at home btw. https://t.co/5agV4ES8qP

“We have a winner for single dumbest tweet about the Israel-Hamas war by an otherwise smart person. Pure opportunism,” reacted Washington Post editorial board member Shadi Hamid. “To use the slaughter of Israeli civilians to enable the slaughter of Ukrainians is shameful.”

How about redirecting those funds to create a border wall? America is being invaded and we are broke! Who do you work for? https://t.co/h9CiSYnEgP

National Review senior editor Jay Nordlinger tweeted, “Beware those trying to pit the Ukrainians against the Israelis — or the Taiwanese. Those doing the pitting are not friends of freedom or man. Or of the U.S. interest,” while American Conservative contributing editor Chris Brunet proposed, “How about you stop funding any and all overseas wars instead?”

There was once a time – I know this is hard to believe – when the U.S. Senate was a gathering of adults who understood America’s role in the world. Instead, we now have the guys you hated in high school trying to score cheap points that they know are wrong. https://t.co/xmXslt8led

Hawley — who has voted against funding for Ukraine — also revealed on Monday that a woman from Missouri “was among those killed by Hamas terrorists in Israel, along with her husband.”
