Matt Gaetz and Nancy Mace Squirm After Bannon Confronts Her: ‘Didn’t She Vote To Send Me To Federal Prison?’

South Carolina Republican Rep. Nancy Mace joined Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz’s group of Republicans who, along with Democrats, voted to oust Rep. Kevin McCarthy from his role as speaker in Tuesday’s historic vote. But it was another of Mace’s votes that was the subject of an awkward moment on Steve Bannon’s Wednesday podcast.

Mace, who is often characterized as a moderate but whom Gaetz referred to as a “maverick”, joined Gaetz’s group of 8 Republicans on Tuesday in voting for the motion to vacate, forcing McCarthy out. In turn, McCarthy flamed their wing of the House on his way out — and many are dissatisfied specifically with Mace’s vote.

The two House members joined former Donald Trump advisor Bannon for his far-right ultra-MAGA podcast on Wednesday to discuss, and as they were talking about terms like “far-right” and “ultra-MAGA,” with Gaetz arguing for Mace as a moderate, Bannon interjected with a pointed quip about her having voted to put him in prison.

“I don’t quite understand why so many people characterize our movement as — And by the way, people including the New York Times reporter you have sitting in the corner in the War Room right now,” said Gaetz, pointing to Bannon’s next guest. “When they write about me, they say things like–”

“Kaboom!” Bannon interjected.

“They say things like a hard-liner, the hard liner,” Gaetz continued.

“Ultra-MAGA. Ultra-MAGA,” said Bannon.

“Oh, yeah, yeah. The the the far right,” said Gaetz. “Let’s talk about this for a moment. Okay? Nancy is not a hard right, you know, intransigent lawmaker. But our Venn diagram overlaps around spending.”

“Didn’t she vote to send me to federal prison for four months?” said Bannon, referring to Mace having joined 8 other Republicans in voting to hold Bannon in contempt of congress.

“I like the Constitution. I’m a constitutional. Okay?” said Mace.

“It’s getting hot in here,” said Gaetz.

“My appellate lawyer would disagree about that, but that’s another,” Bannon replied to Mace.

Gaetz went on to say that Mace is a fiscal hawk, and the two talked about how they sometimes agree, sometimes don’t, but do agree that leadership is not giving the House the opportunity to vote and amend budget issues.
