Ted Cruz Keeps Fleeing Reporter Whose Abortion Question He Refuses to Answer: ‘Call My Office’
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) is having a difficult time coming up with an answer to a question about a major news story in his home state of Texas.
Last week, a Texas judge ruled in favor of a 31-year-old woman and mother of two named Kate Cox, who sought to terminate her pregnancy under the medical exemption provision of the state’s anti-abortion law. Her fetus had trisomy 18, a chromosomal condition that causes physical abnormalities. If carried to term, the child would not be able to live outside the womb for more than a few days, her attorneys said.
The judge issued a temporary restraining order against the state, preventing it from arresting any doctor who performed the abortion. Despite the ruling, Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton promised to arrest any doctor who performed the procedure on Cox. The state Supreme Court sided with Paxton. Ultimately, Cox left the state to obtain the abortion.
NBC News reporter Kate Santaliz has had quite a time this week trying to get an answer from Cruz on this. Her latest attempt came on Thursday, where in a Capitol parking lot she asked a fleeing Cruz directly about the matter for at least the second time this week:
SANTALIZ: Senator, are you supportive of the Texas Supreme Court’s ruling in the Kate Cox case that prevented her from getting an abortion after she learned her fetus was not viable?
CRUZ: Just call our press office.
SANTALIZ: I actually have for two days now, and I still haven’t received an answer.
CRUZ: Thank you.
On Tuesday, Cruz told Santaliz to “call our press office” three times rather than answer her questions.
