Trump-Loving Jon Voight Breaks with Republicans and Calls for ‘Proper Testing’ and ‘Mental Capacity’ for Gun Ownership

Outspoken conservative actor Jon Voight has called for much stricter qualifications for owning and operating firearms in the wake of the Uvalde, Texas elementary school shooting where a gunman took more than 20 lives.

In a video originally posted to his Facebook page, Voight urged “proper testing” for gun owners. The video was titled, “My soul cries for all lost.”

The staunch conservative said stricter gun measures is not a “Left” or “Right” issue.

“It’s not about Left, Right, guns, no guns. This is about brains that are dysfunctioning. This is mental,” he said. “This is not about healthy human beings serving the country with arms to bear or even the right of this Constitution for bearing arms.”

Gun ownership, Voight argued, should be based on one’s “mental capacity” in order to keep weapons out of the hands of potential mass shooters.

“We must identify every individual for their credentials, for their mental capacity to bear arms,” the Ray Donovan actor said. “There should be proper qualifications for gun ownership and proper testing. One should only own a gun if they’re qualified and schooled”

Voight, arguably as well-known for his acting these days as he is for his support for former President Donald Trump, ends his video by saying, “may God watch over all and bring comfort for this loss, which may never heal for each child was so precious a gift.”

Voight’s words are incredibly different from Trump’s reaction to the shooting. The former president decided to go ahead and attend an NRA convention in Houston only days after the tragic shooting. In his speech, he reiterated his opposition to gun control pushes.

“Every time a disturbed or demented person commits such a hideous crime, there’s always a grotesque effort by someone in our society to use the suffering of others to advance their own extreme political agenda,” the Republican told the crowd.
