A new poll conducted by CNN found that President-elect Donald Trump will enter his second term with a far higher approval rating than when he first became president in 2017.
The poll also found that the public believes Trump will carry out some of his biggest campaign promises regarding the economy and immigration while also using his executive power to go after political enemies and pardon allies. Trump has vowed to tariff goods from close U.S. allies and deport millions of undocumented migrants.
His current favorability with the public stands at 46% approval while 48% disapprove, with 56% of Americans believing he will do a good job in his second term. Moreover, 55% of Americans approve of his handling of the transition of power.
Back in 2017, only 40% approved of Trump’s White House transition while 48% expected him to do a good job as president.
The CNN poll indicates that Trump’s increased popularity comes from the public having positive expectations about the new administration’s handling of the economy:
Trump’s increased popularity comes as narrow majorities expect improvement in the state of the country and its economy after the new administration takes office. Overall, 56% say they believe that economic conditions in this country will be very or somewhat good a year from now and 52% say that the country more generally will be better off four years from now.
Those views diverge by party. Democrats are less likely than Republicans to expect economic conditions a year from now to be very or somewhat good (31% among Democrats compared to 85% of Republicans). Most independents (54%) believe that economic conditions will be good a year from now.
Currently, President Joe Biden is leaving office with some of the lowest approval ratings of his entire presidency at 38%, according to an average by RealClearPolitics.
CNN’s poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.2% and it was conducted between January 9-12 among 1,205 American adults.
