Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) declined an opportunity to rebuke comments by President Donald Trump regarding the murders of Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner.

The famous film director and his wife were found stabbed to death in their Brentwood home on Sunday. Their son, Nick Reiner, has been arrested in connection with the killings. Trump responded to the murders by blaming Rob Reiner, a longtime liberal activist and critic of the president.

A very sad thing happened last night in Hollywood. Rob Reiner, a tortured and struggling, but once very talented movie director and comedy star, has passed away, together with his wife, Michele, reportedly due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME, sometimes referred to as TDS. He was known to have driven people CRAZY by his raging obsession of President Donald J. Trump, with his obvious paranoia reaching new heights as the Trump Administration surpassed all goals and expectations of greatness, and with the Golden Age of America upon us, perhaps like never before. May Rob and Michele rest in peace!

When asked about his remarks on Monday, Trump doubled down and called Reiner “a deranged person.”

Trump’s reaction was widely condemned across the political spectrum, but not by Johnson. At the Capitol on Monday, Manu Raju of CNN and Eric Michael Garcia of The Independent caught up with the speaker, who could not get away from the two reporters fast enough.

“Mr. Speaker, do you condemn Trump’s post about Rob Reiner?” Raju asked, before Garcia immediately followed with his question.

“What are your thoughts about what President Trump said about Rob Reiner at his press conference today?” Garcia inquired.

“I don’t do ongoing commentary about everything that’s said by everybody in government every day,” Johnson replied.

“That’s the president of the United States,” Raju observed.

“We are trying to bring down healthcare costs for the American people. They’re in very important votes, very important issues, and that’s what we’re focused on.”

“A lot of your members are criticizing him,” Raju replied.

“I gave commentary this morning, and you all heard it,” Johnson said.
