President Donald Trump is leaving the G7 summit in Alberta, Canada a day early amid escalating hostilities between Israel and Iran. He also ordered that the National Security Council prepare for an imminent meeting in the White House Situation Room.
Israel launched a wave of first strikes last week in what Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called a “preemptive” attack. Israeli officials have long alleged that Iran is seeking to build nuclear weapons. In last week’s bombings, Israel targeted top military officials and nuclear scientists, as well as nuclear facilities in the country. Iran has denied it is seeking a nuclear weapon and says its nuclear sites are for civilian purposes.
On Monday night, Trump posted a cryptic warning:
Iran should have signed the “deal” I told them to sign. What a shame, and waste of human life. Simply stated, IRAN CAN NOT HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON. I said it over and over again! Everyone should immediately evacuate Tehran!
About 10 million people live in Tehran.
Shortly afterward, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announced that Trump would leave the summit early:
President Trump had a great day at the G7, even signing a major trade deal with the United Kingdom and Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Much was accomplished, but because of what’s going on in the Middle East, President Trump will be leaving tonight after dinner with Heads of State.
About 20 minutes before Trump posted his warning, the president lashed out at Tucker Carlson, who has urged Trump not to further involve the U.S. in Middle Eastern conflicts.
“Somebody please explain to kooky Tucker Carlson that,” IRAN CAN NOT HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON!” he wrote on Truth Social.
Israel’s initial airstrikes last week came just two days before Trump’s envoy to the Middle East was set to meet Iranian officials in Oman for negotiations. After Israel’s attack, Iran canceled the meeting.
