Trump’s Education Secretary Tells Trump She’s Dismantling Her Own Department: Working to ‘Fire Myself!’

Department of Education Secretary Linda McMahon made herself and the rest of President Donald Trump’s cabinet laugh on Wednesday by joking that she’s never worked “so hard” to get herself fired.

At a lengthy televised cabinet meeting, Trump was given various updates by his cabinet members, including by McMahon, who detailed the massive cuts at the Department of Education. The president said her goal would be to abolish the DOE altogether when he nominated her.

“I told Linda — ‘Linda, I hope you do a great job and put yourself out of a job,'” he said at the time.

On Wednesday, McMahon said she’s doing exactly that.

“Well, Mr. President, I don’t think I’ve ever worked so hard to try to fire myself,” she joked, drawing laughter. “But we are certainly making great strides in that.”

McMahon said the DOE has “consolidated” district offices and has “fewer people working more efficiently.”

“We reduced the folks over in the Department of Education by about 50% now,” she said.

McMahon promised a historic overhaul of the DOE when she took over, telling staff about their “final mission” in a statement.

“In coming months, we will partner with Congress and other federal agencies to determine the best path forward to fulfill the expectations of the President and the American people,” she wrote. “We will eliminate unnecessary bureaucracy so that our colleges, K-12 schools, students, and teachers can innovate and thrive.”

At the cabinet meeting, McMahon also said they are “putting back into place” collecting student loans that have been “delinquent” since March 2020, starting on May 5.

“So for those that have borrowed money and who have not been paying, that’s not just to be punitive, there are many ways to go online to understand how they can get back into the right payment structure,” she said.
