‘IT’S ALREADY WORKING’: Trump Credits Two-Day-Old Tariff Policy — For Last Month’s Jobs Report

It was not quite “Mission Accomplished,” but President Donald Trump took an eyebrow-raising victory lap following a positive jobs report released Friday morning.
The U.S. Economy added a stronger than expected 228,000 jobs for the month of March, though the unemployment rate ticked up one decimal to 4.2% from 4.1%.
As a result, Trump took to social media and posted, “GREAT JOB NUMBERS, FAR BETTER THAN EXPECTED. IT’S ALREADY WORKING. HANG TOUGH, WE CAN’T LOSE!!!”

Given the raft of news coverage over Trump’s controversial tariff policy and the market’s adverse reaction, it seems clear that the president is aiming to deflect with the “IT’S ALREADY WORKING” salvo included in his message.
Historians will note, however, that the tariff policies were announced on April 2nd — notably after the markets closed — and the jobs report was for the month of March, before the so-called “Liberation Day” went into effect.
To be fair, the word “IT’S” in “IT’S ALREADY WORKING” could be a reference to anything, but it seems safe to assume it is a reference to the trade policy that has appeared to have accomplished the impossible: getting Senator Ted Cruz to say something negative about Trump.
