President Donald Trump celebrated the success of Germany’s right-wing parties in an all-caps post on Truth Social following the country’s Sunday election.
German parliament opposition leader Friedrich Merz’s conservative alliance won Germany’s national parliamentary election while the controversial far-right AfD – which was boosted by Elon Musk and Vice President JD Vance – saw record turnout.
Merz’s center-right, Christian governing alliance consists of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and Christian Social Union (CSU). The alliance took nearly one-third of parliament seats, according to projections. Merz is expected to become Germany’s next chancellor.
The anti-immigration Alternative for Germany party (AfD) was projected to come in second with about one-fifth of parliament seats. AfD leader Alice Weidel called her party’s Sunday showing a “historic success.”
The party almost doubled the number of seats it won four years ago.
Musk portrayed the AfD as the only party that could “save” Germany in the lead-up to the election, while Vance met with Weidel during his Munich trip two weeks ago.
Trump celebrated the election Sunday afternoon as a blow to mass migration advocates via a Truth Social post:
“LOOKS LIKE THE CONSERVATIVE PARTY IN GERMANY HAS WON THE VERY BIG AND HIGHLY ANTICIPATED ELECTION. MUCH LIKE THE USA, THE PEOPLE OF GERMANY GOT TIRED OF THE NO COMMON SENSE AGENDA, ESPECIALLY ON ENERGY AND IMMIGRATION, THAT HAS PREVAILED FOR SO MANY YEARS,” the president wrote.
Trump also celebrated himself, concluding, “THIS IS A GREAT DAY FOR GERMANY, AND FOR THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF A GENTLEMAN NAMED DONALD J. TRUMP. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL — MANY MORE VICTORIES TO FOLLOW!!!
