Trump Considering Ban on TikTok if Chinese Parent Company Fails to Sell the App
President Donald Trump told reporters at the White House on Friday that the administration is still considering a move to ban TikTok in the United States.
U.S. officials have voiced concerns the app is too intrusive on user privacy and that its parent company, ByteDance Ltd., has ties to the Chinese government that could undermine American security.
ByteDance is reportedly considering whether to sell the app — valued at $100 billion — to an American company, including Microsoft.
White House trade adviser Peter Navarro suggested earlier this month that the president was planning on taking action against the app, while Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also issued a warning to American Tik Tok users.
“We are looking at TikTok. We may be banning TikTok,” Trump told reporters. “We might be doing some other things. There are a couple of options, but a lot of things are happening, so we’ll see what happens, but we are looking at a lot of alternatives with respect to TikTok.”
The move is meant to resolve policymakers’ concerns that the Chinese owned social media app may be a national security risk to its American users.
Democratic nominee Joe Biden’s 2020 presidential campaign has also banned staffers from downloading the video app, citing security and privacy concerns.
