Biden Cancels Campaign Calls for Harris After ‘Garbage’ Gaffe, Won’t Stump for Her Anymore: Report
President Joe Biden will not campaign for Vice President Kamala Harris again after his controversial comments about Trump supporters on a video call earlier this week, according to a report.
The president appeared to call supporters of former President Donald Trump “garbage” while speaking to Hispanic voters on behalf of Harris. Biden later issued a clarification.
The AP reported on Thursday that the White House transcript of the statement was edited.
Fox News’s Jacqui Heinrich reported Friday evening on Special Report she had been told Biden was done campaigning for Harris after the comment.
Anchor Bret Baier tossed to Heinrich in Wisconsin for an update on the Harris campaign’s weekend schedule. The network White House correspondent reported:
While Harris campaigns in Wisconsin, President Biden was hundreds of miles away talking to union workers in Philadelphia at an official event. Tonight, Fox News has learned multiple campaign calls that were publicly advised on the president’s schedule for yesterday afternoon were canceled as he faces continuing fallout over his “garbage” comment on a Zoom earlier this week.
None of the calls that had been scheduled were officially sanctioned by or affiliated with the Harris campaign. Biden has no official campaign events on his schedule ahead of the election., Bret
Biden was addressing blowback from a Trump rally joke made by roast comedian Tony Hinchcliffe about Puerto Rico Tuesday when he appeared to call Trump supporters “garbage.”
An official transcript of his remarks read:
And just the other day, a speaker at his rally called Puerto Rico a “floating island of garbage.” Well, let me tell you something. I don’t– I– I don’t know the Puerto Rican that– that I know– or a Puerto Rico, where I’m from– in my home state of Delaware, they’re good, decent, honorable people.
The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporter’s– his– his demonization of Latinos is unconscionable, and it’s un-American.
The Associated Press reported Friday the transcript was altered by the White House to add an apostrophe at the objection of stenographers. The apostrophe was reportedly added to make it appear as though Biden had insulted Hinchcliffe and not millions of Republican voters.
Heinrich’s reporting about Biden sitting on the sidelines during the final days of the race follows claims Harris’s team sought to distance itself from the president and viewed him as a potential liability.
