Brian Kilmeade Calls For Cancellation of White House Correspondent’s Dinner Over Biden’s Treatment of the Press
Brian Kilmeade has had enough of the Biden Administration’s rude treatment of the press and, as a result, called for the cancellation of this year’s White House Correspondents Dinner.
At issue is a recent New York Times statement calling out President Joe Biden’s rather stunning avoidance of the press, both in terms of interviews and press conferences, relative to his predecessors. The NY Times statement opens:
For anyone who understands the role of the free press in a democracy, it should be troubling that President Biden has so actively and effectively avoided questions from independent journalists during his term. The president occupies the most important office in our nation, and the press plays a vital role in providing insights into his thinking and worldview, allowing the public to assess his record and hold him to account.
This followed a Politico report that outlined a growing animosity between the Biden administration and the New York Times.
Fox News White House reporter Peter Doocy referenced this while reporting on Fox & Friends Friday morning and noted how “Biden has so actively and effectively avoided questions from independent journalists during his term” before noting:
Mr. Biden is granted far fewer press conferences and sit down interviews with independent journalists than virtually all of his predecessors. But look at the numbers of press conferences at this point in their terms. Biden just 34 way fewer than Trump, 58, Obama 71, Bush 71, and Clinton 121. And this is a president who talks a lot about his involvement with marches as a young man during the civil rights movement.
“It is so rude,” Kilmeade said as Doocy wrapped his segment, adding, “That’s why the Washington Correspondents Dinner should really not be taking place.”
“The rudeness and the standoffish ness of this administration with any questions, any press conferences, any interviews for the past two years — the past three and a half years — now for the last six months,” Kilmeade continued. “He’s not going to meet with anybody!”
Kilmeade certainly makes a strong point about the White House Communications team and President Biden’s inaccessibility, but should we really cancel a weekend of free drinks and pass our sources as a result?
