CNN Reporter: Hillary’s Story About Signing Up for the Marines ‘Seems So Unusual’
CNN’s senior Washington correspondent Jeff Zeleny seemed skeptical Thursday after Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton revived a story about how she tried to join the Marines in the 1970’s.
The story, which Clinton has told many times before, was that she tried to join the Marines shortly after moving to Arkansas when she was 26 or 27. The Marine recruiter turned her down because she was a woman while giving fake reasons why they wouldn’t take her, according to Clinton’s retelling.
“So, did Hillary Clinton really try to join the Marines?” asked CNN’s Chris Cuomo. “…Jeff Zeleny, what’s the answer, my brother?”

“Well, it’s a great question,” he said. “We do not have enough specifics actually to actually know if it’s true or not…”
“She didn’t give any other explanation. So, we asked her campaign for just a few more details on this,” Zeleny said. “Because it seems so unusual that a Yale-educated lawyer who worked on the anti-war campaigns of McCarthy and McGovern, who had just moved to Arkansas, whose husband was about to become the Attorney General of the state would decide to want to join the Marines.”
“But the campaign said they’re not going to add any more comment on this,” he said. “So the questions are left to discuss here.”
