CNN’s Stelter: Way Fox Handled Bundy Story Has No Equivalent on MSNBC

CNN’s host of Reliable Sources, Brian Stelter, appeared on The Lead with Jake Tapper on Thursday to discuss the fallout in conservative media circles resulting from the racially insensitive comments made recently by Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy. Stelter said that the way in which Fox News Channel covered that story is virtually unprecedented and has no equivalent in the coverage of a past event by its ideological competitor, MSNBC.

Tapper asked Stelter whether the criticism of the media, that the press often asks Republicans to answer for controversial comments conservatives make but rarely asks Democrats to answer for liberals who overstep the bounds of decency, was an accurate one. Stelter said that it can be an accurate critique of the press, but not in this case.

“I can’t think of any parallel to this case,” Stelter said. “I can’t think of MSNBC taking an equivalent story on the left and spending weeks covering it the way Fox News has, and Sean Hannity chief among them.”

Stelter criticized Hannity, who recently denounced Bundy’s comments after promoting his cause against the Bureau of Land Management for some time, for failing to vet Bundy before promoting his grievance with the federal government.
