James Comey Promises ‘Severe Consequences’ for FBI Officials Found Communicating With Rudy Giuliani

FBI Director James Comey, speaking to Senators Wednesday, promised “severe consequences” if he finds out any FBI officials were in communication with Rudy Giuliani regarding the investigation into Hillary Clinton.

Giuliani raised eyebrows last October when he hinted at the FBI’s reopening of its email investigation into Clinton during an appearance on Fox & Friends October 25.

The former mayor of New York and adviser to Donald Trump said the campaign had “a couple of surprises left”, and hinted at further “revelations” in the morning interview. The next day he told Fox’s Martha MacCallum that there was “a surprise or two that you’re going to hear about in the next two days.” Giuliani also claimed to be in contact with FBI officials, though he later backpedaled, claiming his sources were all former agents.

On October 28, Comey sent the now infamous letter to Congress detailing new emails found pertaining to the Clinton investigation.

During Wednesday’s Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) grilled Comey, noting that during the investigation, “a number of surrogates like Rudy Giuliani claimed to have a pipeline to the FBI. He boasted that, and I quote, ‘numerous agents talk to him all the time,’ regarding the investigation.”

“Did anybody in the FBI during this 2016 campaign have contact with Rudy Giuliani about the Clinton investigation?”

In response, Comey said he did not know, but added “if I find out that people were leaking information about our investigations, whether to reporters or to private parties, there will be severe consequences.”

Comey remarked that “it’s a matter that I’m very, very interested in,” and confirmed that he is looking into the matter.

Given the FBI director is actively looking into potential — and highly illegal — contacts between Giuliani and bureau agents, it is perhaps no surprise that the former mayor has been keeping a low profile since the election.
