Dem Rep.: If Trump Fired Comey Because of Russia, It’s ‘Grounds to Start Impeachment Proceedings’

Last week, it was reported that Special Counsel Robert Mueller had obtained an early draft of a letter President Donald Trump composed that outlined his reasons for firing FBI Director James Comey. It has since been reported that Congressional investigators are also honing in on the letter, leading to speculation that Trump used the Russia probe as his rationale for terminating Comey.

During an appearance this afternoon on MSNBC, Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-TX) stated that if evidence shows that Comey was canned over the investigation into Russian election interference and potential collusion with the Trump campaign, Congress should act. And act towards impeachment.

“If it can be substantiated that the initial reason to remove Jim Comey was Russia that that is grounds to begin the impeachment process?” MSNBC host Ari Melber asked Castro.

“Yes, absolutely,” the Texas lawmaker responded.

Castro further acknowledged that reports do seem to allege that the letter indicates that is the case, adding that if that is what is concluded, it is “grounds to start impeachment.”

Shortly after Trump fired Comey, he told NBC News anchor Lester Holt that the whole Russia thing was on his mind when he decided to get rid of the FBI chief.
