Extremely Despondent Jim Jordan Tells CNN McCarthy ‘Didn’t Deserve This’
Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) appeared despondent following Rep. Kevin McCarthy’s (R-CA) ousting as speaker of the House on Tuesday.
In an exchange with CNN, Jordan said, “I thought it was unfair to Kevin. Kevin, I think, has done a fine job and he and I came in together. He’s a good man, um, and he didn’t deserve this, in my judgment.”
Asked whether he would run for speaker, Jordan replied, “That’s a decision for the conference.”
Rep. Austin Scott (R-GA) also condemned McCarthy’s ouster during an interview with CNN, telling the network, “I think Kevin recognizes that nobody can meet their demands and the conference is going to have figure out how we deal with, you know, eight people that are here that candidly aren’t interested in governing, they’re more interested in, you know, grifting.”
Rep. Derrick Van Orden (R-WI) said, “Republicans who have been claiming to be fiscal conservatives just voted with every single Democrat in the House of Representatives. That would be the equivalent of every Republican voting for Nancy Pelosi. That’s what they did.
McCarthy railed against the eight Republicans who voted to oust him as speaker on Tuesday and argued they were not conservatives.
“They don’t get to say they are conservative because they are angry and they are chaotic. That’s not the party I belong to,” he said. “They are not conservatives and they do not have the right to have the title.”
Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) and seven other Republicans voted to remove McCarthy as speaker after Gaetz accused McCarthy of failing to keep a deal that he made with the House Freedom Caucus in January.
